Republic | The Orchard Project

About the Show:

REPUBLIC is a sung-through musical set in Northern Ireland in the 1970s during the most violent years of the Troubles. Based on Shakespeare’s Henry IV, it follows the rise of Hal O’Byrne from IRA mastermind to politician as he transforms himself into the country’s greatest hope for Irish peace and unity. As Hal sheds his terrorist skin, he must leave behind the pub and his violent roots, and shield himself in a politically-motivated marriage. The world of 1970s Belfast is one where bombs go off every day, spies are everywhere, and Catholics and Protestants cannot coexist. It is a tinderbox ready to explode. The musical landscape of the show weaves together traditional Celtic music, pulsing Irish rock, and classical motifs into an epic cinematic score. REPUBLIC is currently being developed with director Michael Arden (Spring Awakening, Once On This Island) and producer Hunter Arnold (Kinky Boots, Dear Evan Hansen).
