What it is

Homegrown gives artists who have worked with The Orchard Project time and space to develop a new project with the OP community. A project might be a feature screenplay, a television pilot, a play or a solo comedy show.

We shape the work around what each project needs. That might mean hearing a script aloud at a table read, trying material in rehearsal or getting feedback from peers and mentors before the next draft.

Who it's for

OP alumni working across screen and stage, including writers, directors, performers and their collaborators. Homegrown makes room for artists to work in a familiar form or try one they haven’t worked in before.

What you'll do

  • Identify what you want to learn about the project during the lab.
  • Use the time to write, workshop or rehearse, depending on the work.
  • Share work in progress and use feedback to plan the next step.

What you get

  • Time and space to focus on a project in development.
  • Feedback from fellow artists and, where it fits the project, OP mentors.
  • Continued connection to the Orchard Project community.
Participation is by invitation only

The Orchard Project invites artists directly. Homegrown Lab has no open call or application form.

Every OP lab
Every lab is free, starts with an orientation in OP Creative Vocabulary, includes office hours and Community Learning events, and connects to OP Forward afterwards.
Homegrown in 2026

In 2026, Homegrown artists developed work across screen and stage. Desdemona Chiang and Kevin Kenerly developed SMALL room, and Kelsey Fox brought the television project Bad Brothers. The summer lineup also included Homegrown Solo artists Aparna Nancherla, George Civeris and Jo Sunday, as well as playwrights Nia Akilah Robinson, Alexa Derman and Nelson Díaz-Marcano.
